FAQ: What is a ‘core’ emotion?

Core emotions are a bit like the baseline emotions. You can think of them a bit like you would the primary colours. Underneath all these core emotions lie secondary or associated emotions. For instance ‘jealousy’ sits under fear and ‘irritation’ sits under anger. If you are able to identify the core emotions when looking at associated emotions and reactions, you will know what is needed to regulate or manage that emotion.

The labels for core emotions and how many there are can vary slightly between different theories but they are largely the same fundamentally. TFBB identifies the core emotions to be:

Anger

Sadness

Shame

Fear

Disgust

Happiness.
